Whether you are a gourmet cook or an “eat out, take out, delivery” kind of New Yorker, chances are you have at least some spices in your kitchen.
When my team and I are setting up a new kitchen for a client, we take the opportunity to provide them with fresh spice storage solutions.
The way you store your spices depends on personal preference and the layout of your kitchen. Below are three storage options to choose from – upper cabinets, in drawer or countertop.
Upper Cabinet
For upper cabinets we recommend an expanding shelf to maximize space and keep your spices visible. You can arrange your spices in different ways such as frequency of use or even alphabetically – cardamom, cinnamon, cumin etc. Here are three that we like.
In Drawer
An in drawer solution is best when your cabinets are too high to easily access your spices or you have a drawer near your stove that would make it really easy to access them when you are cooking. We love this chrome In Drawer Spice Rack Set from the Container Store but make sure to measure the depth of your drawer. It is 4” high so you’ll need at least 4 ½” to clear the top of the drawer.
If your kitchen drawers are shallow and you want an in drawer solution, we recommend these very clever Spice Liners. You simply put them in the drawer and place your spices in the grooves. They nest easily and stay in place.
For in drawer storage we also love IKEA’s Droppar Jars.
They come in an assortment of shapes and sizes to create a whimsical, customized solution for your spices.

Counter Top
If you prefer to display your spices on your countertop, we recommend this versatile stainless steel turntable from the Container Store (We also recommend it for upper cabinet storage for spices as well as oils and vinegars!).
For the countertop we also like the Chrome 18 Bottle Spice Rack
The bottles are attractive and the whole set is less expensive than buying spice bottles individually! You can combine the bottles with the turntable or the spice liner above for a uniform look. Another thing we like about this spice rack is that it comes with pre-printed labels!
Wall Storage
Another great way to organize your spices is to mount shelves or racks on your wall. Here are some great ideas and products to inspire you.
